Young Start-up Talent Gatwick Winners Bake up a Storm at Lingfield Showcase

The young entrepreneurial initiative for the Gatwick Diamond ‘Young Start-up Talent’ (YST) revealed the winner of the 2016 prize fund at Lingfield Park Marriott Hotel on 7th March 2016.

The showcase was home to the highly anticipated premiere of the YST Dragons Den style film which saw the process that the five finalists had gone through and their pitches to a panel of leading business professionals, in a bid to walk away with the prize fund worth £50,000 of business products and services – all donated by local and national businesses. Zoe Wright of B&CE and judge said – “The highlight has been seeing the amount of passion and energy the contestants have for their ideas and concepts.”

The initiative, which is set to inspire 16-25 year olds with a flair for business, has been searching for this year’s most promising young entrepreneurs since July last year. After a process spanning over a number of months including workshops, 121 style speed networking and Dragons Den style pitches – the winner was announced as JubyLee Bakes.

A group of six young entrepreneurs make up JubyLee Bakes who all met at Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School a number of years ago, with some now attending Collyers College in Horsham – all of the six have special needs and autism. The group have created a bakery running alongside a tag line “Special bakes made by special people.”  JubyLee Bakes is made up of Simon Tomlinson, Aaron Dawson, Alice King, James Connell, Kate Bentley and Siobhain Lee plan to create their own independence through their bakes. They would like to inspire other young people like themselves whilst providing a whole host of tasty treats that they plan to sell through a number of outlets. Simon commented “The judges, sponsors and YST team have all been extremely helpful and it’s been such an exciting process.”

Matthew Tyson – of Richard Place Dobson and long term judge said “The highlight for me is how diverse the group of individuals are and the level of energy and commitment that they put in”. Rebecca Glazebrook of PDT Solicitors added “Regardless of who has won all the finalists should take a lot of pride in what they have achieved and continue to pursue their dreams.”

The finalists included:

Peteris Sobolevs a student at Sackville School with his unique confectionary business – Sweetmans Sweets.

Thomas Hussey who studies at Central Sussex College, with his business Zaoby; an online hosting company.

Akan Ekanem – a recently graduate presented his UK based transportation network company SquareMile.

Collyers College Student, Robbie Walder who tackled the den with a unique intelligent doorbell business – SyncedIn, said “Young Start-up Talent has turned my idea into something which is almost a reality. I’m working towards something now. The process been very enjoyable and educational throughout. “

The showcase heard from guest speakers – Andrew Perkins – Managing Director of Lingfield Park, multi-award winning young entrepreneur Ben Towers who is currently appearing on CBBC’s Pocket Money Pitch and Daryl Gayler Director of NatWest and long term judge who said “It’s about passing on and instilling life skills and confidence to unlock the potential in these young individuals.”

Other speakers included 2015 Gatwick Diamond finalists, Will Bower of Royalty Three, Christopher Foster of Student Engine and Bethany Landskroner of Terra Nova Performing Arts, who all revisited the stage with an update on what their first 12 months in business has looked like. Bethany’s musical theatre students performed at the opening of the show.

With the help of sponsors Fastsigns each of the finalists exhibited their businesses in the form of a trade stand and the work that had been put in over the previous months.

Many of the Young Start-up Talent alumni were also at the event with Dean Day of Greenlight Games adding “the evening was filled with extremely talented entrepreneurs and aspiring business ideas. Networking with other young entrepreneurs such as Ben Towers always provides amazing insight and valuable knowledge.
