February 2015, Brighton, Sussex:

Jodie Deakin wins Young Start-up Talent Brighton Region 2015 scooping £50,000 prize

by Sussex & Surrey PR Agency Media Word Waves

This year the Brighton Racecourse played host to the 10th Young Start-up Talent (YST) showcase revealing the Brighton and Hove 2015 winner, Jodie Deakin, with her luxury leather pet accessory company, 'Hounds and Hides.' When asked how she felt about her recent victory, a tongue-tied Jodie simply said "I just didn't expect it all. I'm so shocked!" Dan Simpson of Hartley Fowler commented that "Jodie is absolutely a worthy winner. She has drive, she knew what she wanted to do and I think she's going to be a very successful business woman." He later went on to describe the evening as "very inspiring."

The showcase was also home to the unveiling of our new video filmed at City College and the British Engineerium which revealed the challenging process behind becoming a Young Start-up Talent winner and how our sponsors reacted to the young entrepreneurs’ business ideas. The leading business professionals that made up our panel were: Dan Simpson - Partner of Hartley Fowler, Gary Chown - Regional Director of RBS, Stephen Mason - MD at Mason Consulting, Mike Holland - Entrepreneur and Property Developer, Rebecca Glazebrook - Partner at PDT Solicitors, Lorraine Nugent - MD Media Word Waves and Matt Turner - MD at Creative Pod.

Multi-Award winning young entrepreneur Ben Towers spoke at the event, shedding light on what it's like to be a young person in the business world. Having begun his business at the age of 11 he inspired not only the youngsters in the audience but all business enthusiasts including our finalists. Towers commented that this was not like most award ceremonies. "You don't just come away with an award. The prize fund is an awful lot of money and services for a young person and you've got intros to great connections and high class sponsors that provide help as well. I think that's one of the great benefits.”

We also heard from Angi Mariani of Latest TV who are filming a six part mini-series following the young entrepreneurs of Young Start-up talent and our previous winner, Natalie Evans, with her successful, organic juice business 42Juice. Natalie described the support from the services she has had over the past year as 'amazing' and said "the most valuable part of the experience is having the expertise." When asked what her advice to our 2015 winner would be she said "If you want to make it work you have to be dedicated, work hard and everything else will follow."

Among the talented finalists were:

Joseph Paul who produces personalised, modern, elegant prints with his bespoke prints company 'Joseph Edward'. He believes the uniqueness of his company lies in the high quality of his products and their personal touch.

Josh Avis whose business involves producing a range of furniture from recycled and reclaimed pallets, hopes to create affordable, bespoke furniture for his customers whilst creating a positive effect on the environment.

Bettina Nemeth- age 23, came to YST with her clothing range 'NEM'. Her range is produced purely from re-used textiles and up-cycled materials thereby reducing consumer waste. NEM clothing is both colourful and fun as well as environmentally friendly.

19 year old Ben Le Brocq is hoping to take his business to the top in a popular industry with his app, 'Little Scavengers', designed to occupy and educate young children on shopping trips.

Jodie has walked away with £50'000 worth of business products and services donated by local sponsors to support the start-up of a successful business. One of our sponsors, Abbey Moreton, from Brighton Chambers of Commerce reflected on the initiative saying "It has direction, it has talent for sure and it encourages creativity, entrepreneurship, forward thinking and a sense of responsibility which is important." After another successful Young Start-up Talent Showcase we can't wait to see how rapidly these new businesses can grow.
